When I learned there was a sunflower field about an hour away from my hometown, I had to hit the road and experience it for myself. A friend and I hit the road and arrived in a beautiful place called Smithfield, Virginia. It was gorgeous and quiet, and I felt like I was on location for a film based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Did I already mention this place was beautiful? When we arrived, we were bummed to see the sunflowers weren’t in the best mood (due to some harsh weather conditions) but the rest of our day trip was a blast, and our sights consisted of some of the cutest shops in town, strangers who possessed the true definition of Southern hospitality, gorgeous landscapes, breathtakingly beautiful homes, and incredible nature trails. It was one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever visited and although the beach has my heart, the country life is just as appealing. The visit to Smithfield for sunflowers ended up turning into more than I could’ve anticipated. My friend and I even had an impromptu photo shoot while we were there. I highly recommend making a trip there if you can. It’s delightful. Do something fun this weekend and enjoy yourself. TGIF!
As you embark on your career, I want you to know some things and stay woke about what you’ll be up against. Please understand that no matter what, you have value, and you matter. Always remember that. As progressive as this world and different workplaces may seem, every workplace has a culture. You’ll be in different places where a lot of people who don’t look like you will be in the room. But know that you belong in those rooms too. Spend some time observing and studying those spaces and learn as much as you can. There will be people you work with who will make presumptions about your competence, education, and ability to fulfill your job duties. There will be more who will think less of you because of the color of your skin and try to disqualify you the moment you make an error, mistake, or ask questions about things you may not understand. This will all feel uncomfortable and you may get insecure, feel like you’re all by yourself, and think you don’t belong there, but ride it out...
